Hello from THE MACHIYA HOTEL TAKAYAMA!
Takayama city is surrounded by beautiful forests and natural scenery within easy day trip distance, perfect for those that enjoy the outdoors. Today we want to recommend the Hirayu Otaki Falls, where you can experience the abundant greenery of the Hida region.

Hirayu Otaki Falls is one of three famous waterfalls in the Hida region, near Hirayu Onsen. It is also listed as one of Japan’s Top 100 Waterfalls, with beautiful views during any season. The drop is 64 meters, making the contrast of the powerful waterfall against the serene forest surrounding the area truly memorable. The waterfall itself is spectacular, but part of the beauty of Hirayu Otaki Falls is in the journey there.
The trail up to the waterfall is well-maintained, winding through the quiet forest. Clear streams run beside the path, while the trees provide a green canopy overhead. The scenery offers plenty of opportunities for photos even before arriving at the falls.
After the gentle hike up, you’ll finally arrive at Hirayu Otaki Falls. The rushing water, rising mist, and deep roar of the waterfall fill the surrounding forest. The atmosphere is peaceful yet there is a sense of power in the area which makes the trip truly special. Visitors can enjoy a walk by the river, or for those who want to get even closer, there is a suspension bridge which brings you close enough to feel the spray of water coming off of the waterfall.
For Japanese history buffs, there is a legend going back to the Warring States period of Japan regarding the waterfall. It’s said that about 450 years ago, a white monkey appeared in front of soldiers from the army of famed warlord Takeda Shingen, led by his vassal Yamagata Masakage, while they were resting by the waterfall. They were unable to move, but the monkey led them to a secret hot spring, which aided in healing the men. This is said to have been the origin of Hirayu Onsen, which took its name from the waterfall.
