Hello from MACHIYA RESIDENCE INN TAKAYAMA!

If you’re looking to discover some of Hida region’s most beautiful natural scenery, be sure to make a stop at the Utsue 48 Waterfalls Prefectural Park.

The Utsue 48 Waterfall Prefectural Park (also known as Utsue Shijuhachi Taki) is located in Kokufu-cho, on the outskirts of Takayama City. As the name suggests, this area is home to a collection of beautiful waterfalls, perfect for nature enthusiasts as well as those who enjoy photography.

Despite its name, the park actually has 13 named waterfalls. The number “48” traces back to a local legend about a young villager named Yosohachi, whose name was interpreted by a Buddhist monk as a reference to the 48 vows of Buddhist law. The name stuck, and the falls have been known as the “48 Waterfalls” ever since.

The highlight of the park is Otaki, the largest waterfall, which measures 18.8 meters. Standing beside it, with the sound of rushing water and the cool forest air around you, it is easy to forget that Takayama city is only a 30 minute drive away.

The trail itself is also beautiful, with the sound of water following you as you make your way. During spring and summer, a variety of wildflowers bloom along the trail, contrasting with the fresh green of the season. In the autumn, the trees are vibrant in shades of red, yellow, and orange.
