Takayama ColumnWinter Event: The Taruma Kanekori Light-Up

Post Date:

About an hour by bus from Takayama Station, you’ll find Shinhodaka Onsen in the Okuhida Hot Spring area. One of its main attractions, Taruma Falls (Taruma no Taki), hosts a winter-only event called “Taruma Kanekori Light-Up” from late December through the end of February.

This event is possible as the winter temperatures of Okuhida create a fantastical frozen landscape at the falls. Around Taruma Falls, stream water is channeled in and gradually frozen by the natural cold to create massive ice formations called “kanekori.” The multi-layered icicles and ice walls are works of ice art, created through a combination of nature and human effort.

When night falls, the colorful lights transform the scene completely. The frozen waterfalls emerge from the darkness, and together with the quiet mountain air, create a magical and mysterious world.

Another appeal of this light-up is that you can enjoy it in the calm atmosphere unique to Okuhida, a hot spring area. Away from the crowds, this is a seasonal spot where you can take your time appreciating the winter beauty that Hida’s nature creates.
