If you ever find yourself wandering the streets of Hida Takayama, don’t leave without trying Mameita. At first glance, its firm, flat shape, like a wooden board (hence the name ‘ita’) may seem simple, but it holds a rich, nostalgic flavor that’s been a local favorite for generations.

Mameita is made from wheat flour, sugar, roasted soybeans, and sometimes peanuts or corn syrup. The taste is a mix of gentle sweetness and slight chewiness, with a variety ranging from simple salted to the comforting flavor of roasted peanuts. It’s the kind of snack you find yourself munching on during breaks again and again!
Mameita is believed to have been enjoyed in Kyoto and other areas during the Genroku period (1688–1704). After Kanamori Nagachika became the feudal lord of Takayama, it was produced in Takayama during the six generations of the Kanamori family’s rule, and has now become a beloved common snack enjoyed by everyone.

As winters are snowy and cold in Takayama, long-lasting traditional sweets like dagashi (old-school sweets) are essential. Mameita is one of those simple and hearty snacks that pair well with tea or any other drink. We recommend the classic peanut flavor, but also love the caramel and seasonal salt flavor in summer. The retro-style packaging also makes it a great Japanese travel souvenir. Don’t forget to enjoy this delicious, traditional Takayama snack during your next visit to our city!
