If you are looking for a peaceful place to enjoy nature and local food in Takayama, we recommend Shiroyama Park and Musashi Restaurant (むさし).

Shiroyama Park is located on a small mountain near the ruins of Takayama Castle. It’s a quiet spot, perfect for a short walk and great views of the Takayama city. On clear days, you can also see the Northern Japanese Alps in the distance. The park is especially beautiful during cherry blossom season in spring and with autumn leaves in the fall.

Before or after your walk, we suggest stopping by Musashi, a small family-run restaurant serving since 30 years. From inside the restaurant, you can enjoy lush green views of Takayama’s townscape and pleasant chirping sound of wild birds.

We recommend trying the Hida yakitori (Japanese chicken grilled skewers), mitarashi dango (soy sauce-glazed rice dumplings), and zaru soba (cold buckwheat noodles served with a savory dipping sauce). They also serve local Hida sake and refreshing shaved ice desserts, such as strawberry milk flavor that are perfect for warmer days. An English menu is also available.
