Hello from Takayama! This is Maki from the MACHIYA INNS & HOTELS Takayama guest services team. Today, I’d like to recommend one of my favorite restaurants in Takayama. If you’re looking to experience Takayama like a local, I highly recommend visiting Kuni Hachi Shokudo (国八食堂), a long-standing local restaurant located about 20 minutes by bus or car from Takayama Station.

As someone born and raised in Takayama, this place holds a lot of fond memories for me. I used to come here with my grandfather when I was a child, and now I visit with my own children. It’s a welcoming, down-to-earth spot that generations of families can enjoy together.
One of the most popular dishes here is the tofu steak, made with locally produced Takayama tofu. You might think, “Tofu? Steak? That doesn’t sound very hearty,” but don’t let the name fool you. This savory dish is rich in flavor and goes perfectly with a bowl of freshly steamed white rice. I also recommend the hormone teishoku (grilled offal set meal), which is known for its bold taste and generous portions.

After your meal, take a relaxing walk along the nearby Miyagawa River, which flows just behind the restaurant. It’s the perfect way to enjoy the calm atmosphere and surrounding nature.
If you’re up for a short drive, head to the Utsue Forty-Eight Waterfalls (Utsue Shijuhattaki Falls), located about 20 minutes away. This beautiful area is home to 13 waterfalls flowing through a steep, forested gorge. The falls are fed by the Takinogami River at an elevation of 1,200 meters, and the scenery changes with each season. During the warmer months, the cool mist and shaded paths offer a refreshing escape from the summer heat.

The walking trails around the waterfalls are well maintained and suitable for visitors of all ages. It’s a great place to enjoy forest bathing, listen to the birds, and connect with nature at a slower pace. We’ll be sharing more local recommendations from Takayama soon, so stay tuned!
