Hello from Takayama! This is Kado from the MACHIYA RESIDENCE INN Takayama team.
A unique aspect of visiting Takayama during the warmer months is the temperature difference from the rest of Japan. Due to the higher elevation, you’ll find it cooler here even during the summer months. For a quiet retreat into nature within the city during your early summer travels, head over to Shiroyama Park.

Located east of the city center, Shiroyama Park sits on the former grounds of Takayama Castle. The castle began construction in 1588 under Lord Kanamori Nagachika, but it was demolished later by order of the Tokugawa Shogunate about 100 years later. Shiroyama Park is a favorite destination for locals to enjoy nature within the city, as it is the largest park in Takayama.
Getting to Shiroyama Park is part of the experience. After passing through Takayama Old Town, a gentle slope leads you up into the park itself. You’ll feel the transition immediately, as the sounds of the city fade away to be replaced by the sounds of the breeze blowing through the trees. You’ll find yourself walking a little more slowly and breathing in the fresh air more deeply as you enjoy the calm atmosphere of the park.

Once you’ve arrived, you’ll find walking trails, gazebos, sweeping views of the mountains surrounding Takayama, and more. It’s a popular local spot for a morning stroll and for visitors looking for something off the beaten path. From cherry blossoms in the spring to fall foliage in the autumn, the scenery is beautiful no matter the season.
The park is also great for families traveling with children. Besides the playground equipment available for use, the park is a great location to enjoy a picnic lunch for the family.
Admission to Shiroyama Park is free, and there are restrooms available inside the park for visitor use. It is approximately a 25 minute walk from Takayama Station.
