Takayama ColumnA Scenic Drive Along Seseragi Kaido

Post Date:

Konnichiwa from THE MACHIYA HOTEL TAKAYAMA! Although public transportation like trains and buses make getting around and sightseeing during your stay here a breeze, there’s also something special in taking the time to enjoy a quiet, scenic drive.

Gifu prefecture, where Takayama is located, is home to the picturesque Seseragi Kaido (せせらぎ街道) driving route, stretching 64 kilometers (approximately 40 miles). The route follows valleys and rivers, so the gentle scenery continues to unfold one after another during your drive. Plenty of natural stopping points along the way provide the perfect opportunity to take a moment to soak in the view.

Seseragi Kaido provides breathtaking views during the autumn with vibrant fall colors, but we especially enjoy the vivid greenery in the late spring and early summer. The green foliage stretching before you contrasting with the clear blue waters of the rivers creates an unforgettable landscape.

If you follow the route south from Hida Takayama, you’ll arrive at Gujo Hachiman. Gujo Hachiman is a castle town with a historical network of canals and waterways, as well as well-preserved traditional streets to stroll through. You’ll also find several Michi no Eki (道の駅), or rest stops, along the way. Michi no Eki has everything from local eateries, souvenir shops, and even farmer’s markets selling local produce and regional specialties of Gifu prefecture.

Whether you love taking peaceful drives through the Japanese countryside, enjoy taking photos of beautiful scenery, or you just have a free afternoon and a rental car, Seseragi Kaido is worth the trip!

Be sure to ask our guest service team at MACHIYA INNS & HOTELS about recommended stops along the route!
