Would you like to experience Kyoto’s summer from a slightly different perspective? This time, we’d like to introduce “ukai,” a traditional evening event in Arashiyama.
Ukai is a centuries-old fishing method in which cormorants are used to catch river fish. After sunset, bonfires are lit along the river, and from a nearby sightseeing boat, you can watch the cormorants chasing fish in the glow of the flames. The flickering light on the water, set against the Arashiyama scenery with Togetsukyo Bridge in view, creates a quiet, atmospheric scene that feels very different from the daytime. Simply spending time on the boat becomes a chance to experience Kyoto’s summer with all five senses.
The event is held every year from July 1 to around September 23. However, it may be canceled depending on the weather or river conditions, so it’s a good idea to check the latest schedule before you go.
From THE MACHIYA KAZAHAYA, you can take the Randen from Shijo-Omiya Station, which is within walking distance, to Arashiyama Station. From there, it’s about a 7-minute walk to the boarding area, making it a convenient route. Since Randen is a streetcar that runs through the city, you can also enjoy the view along the way to Arashiyama.
The flames reflected on the river at night and the skill of this traditional practice create a special summer scene you won’t want to miss.
