Why Takayama Creates Exceptional Sake

What makes great sake? Takayama has everything it needs naturally. Takayama is blessed with two essential ingredients for premium sake-making: crystal-clear mountain water and a climate with a wide range of temperatures. This natural combination creates perfect conditions for growing high-quality sake rice and allows local brewers to craft exceptional Japanese sake. You won’t find sake like this anywhere else!

Take Part in Takayama’s Sake Tasting Experience

Want to try Takayama’s Japanese sake for yourself? Many breweries here offer tastings for just 100 yen per cup. This makes it easy and affordable to try different types of sake until you find one you love. Some breweries also offer seasonal brewery tours (reservations required), where you can witness the art of Japanese sake craftsmanship up close. You’ll watch skilled brewers at work and learn about traditional methods that families have used for hundreds of years. Take Hirase Sake Brewery for example, they’ve been making sake since 1623. That’s over 400 years of experience passed down from one generation to the next.

Spotting the Breweries

Look for the large “Sugidama” (cedar balls) hanging outside each brewery. They are traditional markers that are your guide to spot authentic sake spots. When new sake is ready, breweries hang fresh, bright green sugidama outside their shops. As the seasons pass, they gradually turn brown, creating a natural calendar that locals use to know when the newest batches are available.

Whether you’re looking for a special bottle to take home or want to enjoy something unique during your stay, we highly recommend visitors to come and find their favorite choice of sake from these traditional breweries preserved over the time.

Follow the Sugidama signs through the historic streets and discover high-quality sake flavors that make our Hida Takayama special!
