Hello! This is Masato from MACHIYA INNS & HOTELS. One of my favorite places to visit in Takayama is Hida no Sato — and in winter especially, it’s hard to beat.
Hida no Sato, or Hida Folk Village, offers a look into Japan’s rural past. Spread across a hillside, the village is home to over 30 traditional thatched and shingled houses, known as gassho-zukuri, all relocated from across the Hida region and preserved as important cultural assets. You can step inside these gassho-zukuri homes, which have been transformed into an open-air museum. Take a look at old farming tools, household items, and everyday objects to get a vivid picture of what life once looked like here!
In winter, the village takes on a completely different character. Thick snow settles over the distinctive gassho-style rooftops, and the large pond freezes over. The views toward the Japan Alps are stunning, and there’s a free telescope near the lookout point if you want to take a closer look. We hope to see you soon in Takayama!
