Hello from Takayama!
If you’re looking for a quiet spot with a view during your visit, we recommend taking a walk to the Takayama Castle Ruins, just a 15-minute stroll from Takayama Station.

Locally known as Shiroyama (literally “castle mountain”), this area was once the site of Takayama Castle. While Takayama Castle itself was built in 1588 and later dismantled in 1695, parts of the original stone walls still remain. From the top—about 686 meters above sea level—you can even catch a glimpse of the Northern Japan Alps on a clear day.

The development of Takayama City as a castle town began around the same time the castle was constructed, blending cultural influences from both Kyoto and Edo (Tokyo). The atmosphere from that time still lingers in the nearby Takayama Old Town, one of the city’s most popular sightseeing areas. When Takayama became a territory directly controlled by the shogunate, the castle was torn down, and its rice storehouse was relocated to what is now the Takayama Jinya, the only remaining Edo-period government building of its kind in Japan.

Today, the ruins are part of Shiroyama Park, the largest park in Takayama. It’s a great place for both a bit of history and a nature walk. Inside the park, there’s a small play area called Ninomaru Children’s Park, perfect for families with young children.

If you’re visiting around lunchtime, keep an eye out for a small local eatery called Musashi, open only during the day. They serve simple dishes like grilled skewers (yakitori) and oden (a Japanese-style hot pot), along with drinks. On sunny days, you can enjoy your meal outdoors in a relaxed, picnic-like setting.

Walking the full trail around the park takes about 40 minutes, a light hiking course that takes you through the quiet forested paths. It’s a great way to enjoy Takayama’s natural beauty without leaving the city. Entry to the park is free, and there’s parking available for around 20 cars, making it a convenient stop for those exploring by car as well.

If you’re visiting Takayama for the first time, take a break from the crowds and spend a peaceful afternoon at Shiroyama Park!
