Hello from Takayama! If you’re planning a trip during early summer, make sure to add the Shinhotaka Ropeway to your itinerary. It’s one of the best ways to experience the beauty of the Northern Alps up close, taking you to over 2,000 meters above sea level.
May and June are a perfect time to visit. The mountains are still dusted with snow, while the lower valleys are covered in fresh greenery—a rare and beautiful mix of seasons. The air is clear, the weather is refreshing, and you’ll be able to take in the scenery at its very best.

Step aboard Japan’s only double-decker gondola and enjoy a slow, scenic ride up the mountain. As you climb higher, you’ll see sparkling rivers, lush forests, and dramatic views unfold before your eyes. When you reach the top at Nishihotakaguchi Station (2,156 meters high), a wide-open observation deck is waiting for you. From here, you can take in breathtaking views of the Hotaka mountain range and Mt. Yari.
Another bonus of visiting during this season: it’s before the busy summer rush, meaning you’ll have a little more space and a lot more quiet to enjoy the views. If you’re looking for a peaceful, unforgettable adventure, a ride on the Shinhotaka Ropeway is a must this early summer.
How to get to Shinhotaka Ropeway:
