Takayama ColumnThe Okame Stone: A Hidden Lucky Spot in Takayama

Post Date:2026/03/25、 Last updated:

You may not find this charming secret spot in major guidebooks, but it has long been popular with locals. The Okame Stone is just a short walk from Takayama Old Town, tucked along Ebizaka Slope.

Ebizaka is a gently winding slope that connects Takayama’s historic Old Town to the Shiroyama area. For generations, it has served as an everyday path for local residents.

The name “Ebizaka” is said to come from the way the road curves—resembling the shape of a shrimp (ebi in Japanese). Today, it’s an easy and pleasant walk from the old town, and a route many visitors naturally pass through while exploring the area.

As you make your way up the slope, be sure to keep an eye on the stone walls lining the path. Hidden among them is a single stone that looks surprisingly like a smiling face.

This is the Okame Stone.

With its rounded shape and natural markings that resemble eyes and a mouth, the stone is said to look like an Okame (also known as Otafuku)—a traditional symbol of good fortune and happiness in Japan. This resemblance is what gave the stone its name.

While it may be easy to miss, spotting the Okame Stone adds a little fun to your walk through Takayama. It’s a simple reminder that sometimes, the most memorable travel moments come from the smallest discoveries.

If you’re exploring beyond the main streets, why not take a short detour and see if you can find this local lucky charm?
