Just a 5-minute walk from JR Takayama Station along the main street leading toward the Old Town, you’ll find 和み家 (Nagomiya)—a local favorite for mitarashi dango rice dumplings loved by both residents and visitors. Usually skewered and grilled over an open flame, mitarashi dango have the chewy, satisfying texture of mochi and a simple, comforting flavor that’s both nostalgic and unique to Takayama.

While many people imagine mitarashi dango as sweet rice dumplings covered in a thick, sweet and savory syrup, the version in Hida-Takayama is unique. Here, the dumplings are grilled with a savory soy sauce, not a sweet one.

Each skewer is freshly grilled to order, filling the air with the rich aroma of soy sauce. The outside is slightly crisp, while the inside remains soft and chewy. The simple flavor of Takayama’s signature soy glaze adds a comforting, nostalgic taste best enjoyed right off the grill. A small bench outside the shop offers the perfect spot to enjoy your dango.

Inside the shop, you’ll also find shelves lined with old-fashioned Japanese snacks and handmade trinkets, creating a warm, retro atmosphere that feels like stepping into a traditional dagashiya (candy shop). Take a break from sightseeing, enjoy your freshly grilled dango, and relax with a comforting taste of Takayama!
