Japan is known for its many famous temples and shrines, and if you’re traveling in Hida Takayama, be sure to visit one of the oldest temples in the Hida region: Hida Kokubunji Temple (飛騨国分寺). Just a 5-minute walk from JR Takayama Station, this temple is a peaceful retreat right in the heart of the city.
The first thing you’ll notice when you step inside the grounds is the giant ginkgo tree, believed to be more than 1,250 years old. Standing nearly 28 meters tall, it’s truly impressive! In autumn, the ginkgo tree transforms into beautiful yellow foliage, and in winter, its branches stretch toward the sky, complementing the sacred temple grounds.

Inside the main hall, you’ll find the Yakushi Nyorai (Medicine Buddha), where visitors come to pray for good health and peace of mind. The temple grounds are also home to the only three-story pagoda in the Hida region, a graceful landmark that blends beautifully with the surrounding townscape. The sound of the bell tower, moss-covered stone steps, and seasonal flowers all add to the calm and gentle atmosphere.
Kokubunji Temple has been rebuilt several times after fires, but it continues to stand as a symbol of history and resilience. Visitors can also receive a goshuin (temple stamp) or buy colorful little omamori (sacred protective charms) as a keepsake.
Right outside the temple, Kokubunji-dori Street is lined with shops and cafés, making it easy to enjoy a stroll and quick refreshments after your visit. Plus, its central location means you can walk to other popular spots like the Takayama Old Town and Dekonaru Yokocho, a lively alley filled with izakaya (Japanese-style pubs) and eateries.
If you’re looking for a quiet spot to pause during your Takayama trip, we highly recommend stopping by Hida Kokubunji Temple. It’s the perfect place to slow down, reflect, and experience a different side of Hida Takayama.
