Looking for a quiet place to relax with a beautiful view?

Just one bus-ride away (or 8-minute drive) from JR Takayama Station, you’ll find THE HIGURASHI, a hidden hillside café surrounded by the peaceful scenery of the Hida Mountains. It’s one of our favorite spots to slow down and enjoy a quiet moment away from the bustle of the town center.

Our Recommendation

Wide windows open to sweeping mountain scenery, making it the perfect place to relax with a warm drink. And while the view is reason enough to visit, the café’s moist and satisfying homestyle pancakes (not the trendy soufflé-style kind) have just the right substance in each bite and are a local favorite to enjoy with coffee or tea.

On the way to the café, you’ll pass by the Matsuri no Mori Festival Museum (飛騨高山まつりの森). This unique museum showcases the craftsmanship behind the famous Takayama Festival, including beautifully decorated Heisei-era floats and performances by traditional mechanical dolls (karakuri ningyō). Even if you’re not visiting during the festival season, it’s a great spot to learn more about Takayama’s traditions and artistry.

Take a short trip outside the town center for a relaxing café experience at THE HIGURASHI, and enjoy your visit to the nearby Matsuri no Mori Festival Museum!
