What comes to mind when you think of visiting a 3,000-meter mountain? The first thing to come to mind is most likely the hiking and the preparation needed. Fortunately, Mount Norikura is a little different, making it a great addition to your Takayama itinerary even if you’re not an experienced hiker.
Mount Norikura (乗鞍岳) stands at 3,026 meters at its highest peak, Kengamine. But you won’t have to climb all the way up yourself. Due to car restrictions on the mountain road in order to protect the nature, visitors board a shuttle bus from Hirayu Onsen or Honokidaira Bus Terminal, and ride all the way up to Tatamidaira, a location approximately 2,700 meters above sea level.
From Tatamidaira, the options range from a relaxed stroll to a proper summit hike. The walk up to Kengamine takes around 40 minutes from the trailhead, while shorter routes lead to scenic viewpoints and fields of alpine wildflowers. On a clear day, the views across the Northern Alps are genuinely breathtaking, the kind of panorama that stays with you long after you head back down.
Above the tree line, the landscape shifts into something that feels quite removed from everyday life. You’ll find wide open mountain terrain, fresh alpine air, and delicate wildflowers growing among the rock.. The trails are well-marked and the mountain is popular enough to feel comfortable for first-timers, though it is worth coming prepared: rocky sections and the mountain’s tendency for rapid weather changes mean good walking shoes and a warm layer are always a good idea no matter the season.
