Takayama has two famous bridges. One is Nakabashi Bridge, the vibrant vermillion bridge we introduced before. Today, we’d like to introduce you to another one: Kajibashi Bridge.
On your way to the Miyagawa Morning Market, where local crafts and food are sold from early morning, you’ll find Kajibashi Bridge spanning the Miyagawa River. Unlike the vibrant color of Nakabashi, this bridge has a more relaxed, everyday Takayama atmosphere. Despite being right next to the busy morning market, it’s a place where you can take your time and enjoy the river view. You’ll find both locals and tourists heading to the Miyagawa Morning Market and walking along the river daily.

In the center of the bridge stand unique statues called Tenaga and Ashinaga (Long Arms and Long Legs). These are humorous looking statues that make a great landmark for your walk. They’re reproductions of carvings from the Ebisu float, one of the floats in the spring Takayama Festival. An interesting detail: they’re actually a married couple.

As locals who have lived and grown up in Takayama city, we recommend pausing at this bridge after exploring the morning market and taking in the view of the Miyagawa River. Rather than rushing to your next destination, taking time to walk while listening to the gentle flow of the river is a quintessentially Hida-Takayama travel moment worth savoring. We look forward to welcoming you to Takayama!
