One of the must-see sights when visiting Hida Takayama in winter is Nakabashi Bridge at night. This iconic vermillion bridge is already one of the area’s most popular landmarks, and throughout the year it serves as a favorite photo spot thanks to its seasonal illuminations.
During the day, the bridge is busy with tourists, but as evening falls, the crowds thin out and a peaceful stillness settles over the riverside. The bridge, lit up in warm light, stands out dramatically against the winter darkness. Even our hotel staff, who see it every year, still find ourselves stopping to admire it.
On snowy evenings, the scene becomes even more magical. Snowflakes drift through the beams of light, creating an almost dreamlike atmosphere. The only sounds are the gentle flow of the river below and the soft crunch of snow underfoot.
After crossing the bridge, you’ll find yourself at the entrance to the Old Town (Sanmachi Suji), another popular attraction. At night, this historic district takes on a different character, with soft lighting casting a warm glow over the traditional wooden buildings. It’s well worth a short detour during your evening stroll.
