Although beautiful all-year-round, autumn in Takayama is one of the most beautiful times to visit. The air turns crisp, and the town is covered in shades of red and gold, offering stunning views wherever you go.
A must-see spot is Nakabashi Bridge, which crosses the clear Miyagawa River in the center of town. The bright red bridge surrounded by autumn leaves creates a perfect contrast against the blue sky. During the day, it’s vibrant and photogenic, while at sunset, the illumination gives the bridge and trees a warm, gentle glow.

Another popular location is Hida no Sato (Hida Folk Village), where traditional gassho-zukuri farmhouses stand among colorful foliage. This open-air museum offers a peaceful atmosphere and a glimpse into Japan’s rural past. After dark, the autumn leaves are beautifully illuminated, and their reflections on the water create a calm, magical scene.
Hida no Sato is about a 15–20 minute bus ride from Takayama Station. Simply hop on the ‘Sarubobo Bus’ for easy access. It’s the perfect spot to visit if you don’t have time to travel to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Shirakawa-go Village.
Takayama in autumn is full of incredible scenery both day and night. Take your time to explore and enjoy this charming mountain town at its most colorful!
