Takayama ColumnMeet the Adorable Frogs of Gero Onsen: One of Japan’s Top Hot Spring Town

Post Date:

Looking to combine your Takayama trip with one of Japan’s most famous hot springs?

We highly recommend visiting Gero Onsen, located between Nagoya and Takayama, about an hour south of Takayama. It is known as one of Japan’s “Big Three” hot springs, alongside Arima Onsen in Hyogo and Kusatsu Onsen in Gunma. The silky-smooth water feels incredibly gentle on your skin, and the surrounding mountain village scenery makes it a perfect escape from city life.

Takayama has its few share of eye-catching mascots like the cute Sarubobo, small red dolls, and now while strolling through the hot spring town, you’ll discover adorable frog statues and decorations everywhere! These cute frogs became Gero’s unofficial mascots because of a fun play on words: “Gero” (the town’s name) which also sounds just like “gero gero,” the sound frogs make in Japanese onomatopoeia.

The frogs aren’t just decorations, the locals consider them good luck charms that bring happiness and prosperity. You’ll spot them on street corners, in front of shops, and throughout the town. They’ve become such popular photo spots that frog-hunting has become part of the Gero experience!

So keep an eye out for your favorite frog designs while exploring as each one has its own personality and style. It’s like a fun treasure hunt while you’re walking between hot spring baths!

Don’t miss the free hand baths (te-yu) located right at JR Gero Station and along the streets leading to the hot spring district. These are perfect for a quick warm-up and let you sample Gero’s famous hot spring waters even if you don’t have time for a full bath.

Whether you’re planning a day trip from Takayama or staying overnight, Gero Onsen offers the perfect combination of relaxation, charm, and those irresistibly cute frogs. It’s a great way to unwind after exploring Hida Takayama and experience another side of this beautiful region.
