'Nananohi' Machiya House: a renovated traditional Japanese holiday home (vacation rental) located within walking distance of Takayama Jinya and the historic streets of Takayama Old Town. This machiya draws inspiration from the region's renowned 'shunkei nuri' lacquerware, a centuries-old craft that enhances the natural beauty of wood through delicate layers of lacquer.

As you approach 'Nananohi' machiya, the warm exterior of locally sourced sugi (Japanese cedar) reflects the craftsmanship of Hida's mountain artisans. Enter through the traditional sliding doors to discover a spacious 108.19㎡ home thoughtfully designed to accommodate up to 9 guests. Just inside the entrance, a ‘maeniwa’ Japanese garden features a Japanese maple tree at its center. With each season, its changing foliage and surrounding greenery create a tranquil atmosphere that seamlessly connects the interior and exterior spaces.

The architecture of 'Nananohi' reflects the refined design once reserved for Takayama's prominent families. High ceilings and open layouts distinguish it from the low-ceiling machiya typically found in the old town.

The 1F bathroom is finished with glossy red tiles that echo the rich tones of shunkei nuri lacquerware. A hinoki cypress bath, crafted from locally sourced wood, provides a relaxing retreat. The house includes 4 bedrooms, offering a choice of traditional tatami rooms with futon bedding or Western-style accommodations. Upstairs, guests can gather around an irori-style hearth table, perfect for shared meals and conversation. Comfortable seating areas throughout invite you to relax and appreciate the natural warmth and texture of the wood.

About This Machiya House

Near Historic Takayama Jinya Historic attractions are within walking distance 'Nananohi' machiya house. Takayama Jinya, which preserves an Edo-period government office, is the only surviving building of its kind in Japan where you can glimpse historical administrative life. Nearby Nakabashi Bridge, with its beautiful vermillion railings, serves as a symbol of Hida Takayama and creates stunning contrasts with spring cherry blossoms and winter snow scenes.

'Nananohi' Machiya House Nananohi stands on a quiet corner of historic Takayama. The facade features locally sourced Hida cedar boards, where natural wood grain combines with delicate lattice work in clean linear patterns.
Traditional craftsmanship appears in every detail. The eaves' supporting brackets display pristine white "gofun-nuri," a classical lime coating that defines authentic Takayama machiya. This traditional technique creates contrast against the warm cedar, reflecting centuries of local architectural heritage.

Entrance with Tsuboniwa Garden A front garden welcomes you at the entrance, where a maple tree spreads its leaves in natural sunlight. Whether departing for your daily adventures or returning to the machiya, you can experience a peaceful moment connecting with the changing seasons of Hida Takayama reflected in this tranquil space.

2F Living Room A spacious living and dining area features a sunken kotatsu-style hearth table and large sofas for comfortable relaxation. The high ceilings create an open, connected space where wooden beams stretching across the ceiling tell the story of the machiya's past. Light fixtures crafted with Mino washi paper from Gifu Prefecture and skilled artisan techniques creates a modern yet elegant atmosphere throughout.

Bedding Set-up: The number of beddings prepared will match the number of guests you have made a reservation for, and not the maximum capacity.

Is this a hotel in Takayama?: No, this is not a hotel in Takayama. Our machiya homes are self-catering, private Japanese-style holiday homes (vacation rentals), which are reserved exclusively for 1 group per day. (Guests will not be sharing the house with any other guests). As there are no staff on-site at the house, our traditional Japanese machiya homes are perfect for travelers interested in immersing themselves in local culture in Takayama!

If you require assistance during your stay, our friendly staff are available via email or telephone between 10AM~7PM. (Emergency assistance is available 24 hours a day.)
Please note that as this is a self-catering holiday homes, and not a hotel, housekeeping during your stay is available for guests who stay 4 night or more.
However, our staff are available for garbage pick-up, to provide additional towels during your stay, and more. We also encourage our guests to reuse bath towels to help us reduce the consumption of water.
