The Miyagawa-cho neighborhood is located between Shijo and Gojo Streets in the Higashiyama district of Kyoto city, along the east bank of the Kamogawa River. It is one of five active hanamachi in Kyoto, alongside Gion Kobu, Gion Higashi, Pontocho, and Kamishichiken. Although each district has its own distinct atmosphere, Miyagawa-cho is particularly known for its ties to traditional performing arts, especially kabuki.

The name ‘Miyagawa’ comes directly from the nearby Kamogawa River. Mikoshi, or divine palanquins, used in the Gion Matsuri were purified in a ceremony at the Kamogawa River, leading to it being referred to literally as the ‘Miyagawa‘, translating to shrine river.

Miyagawa-cho was established during the Edo period (1603-1868), around the same time that Izumo no Okuni’s Kabuki Odori (dance) grew popular. Miyagawa-cho is said to be the location of a number places that early kabuki was performed as well as teahouse establishments. With the growth of kabuki dance, the area became a bustling hub of culture and business. Official government permission to operate teahouses was given to Miyagawa-cho in 1751.

The neighborhood today is home to the remaining ochaya teahouses, local restaurants, as well as Miyagawa-cho’s very own theater, the Miyagawa-cho Kaburenjo.
