THE MACHIYA LOUNGE is housed within a late 19th-century machiya architecture, an example of traditional Kyoto craftsmanship built by a master carpenter of his time.
This machiya building was originally the home of the Nakamura family, who had found success as merchants, and was constructed during the late Edo to early Meiji period. Built in the Ōhori-zukuri style, the characteristic small eaves, latticed windows, surrounding walls, and gardens throughout the property all reflect the care and style of the people who once lived here. The building has since been recognized by the City of Kyoto as a Structure of Landscape Importance.
Over the years, the building has shifted from a private residence to a place of hospitality, but its original character has been carefully maintained throughout.
