Known as one of the most beautiful festivals, or\u00a0matsuri<\/em>, in Japan, the\u00a0Takayama Festival<\/strong>\u00a0is a must-see event for visitors in spring. Held in Takayama City, the festival takes place at the historic\u00a0Hie Shrine<\/strong>, locally known as\u00a0\u201cSann\u014d-sama\u201d.\u00a0<\/em>Each year, on\u00a0April 14 and 15,\u00a0<\/strong>the shrine becomes the central stage of the\u00a0Sann\u014d Festival (Spring Takayama Festival).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The main event of the festival is the elaborately decorated float procession. These floats, crafted with intricate carvings and detailed embroidery move through the streets of Takayama showcasing the history and craftsmanship of Takayama. Called \u201cyatai\u201d<\/em> in Japanese, the floats are moving works of art which offer a glimpse into the traditions which have been preserved by the people of Takayama throughout the years. During the day, the floats can be seen up close as they travel through the streets. As evening approaches, lanterns are lit, and the festival takes on a magical atmosphere for visitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
