When you think of Takayama, a city surrounded by the lush mountains of the Japanese Alps, fresh seafood might not be the first thing that comes to mind.
However, thanks to Takayama’s excellent transportation links, local restaurants are able to receive shipments of the freshest seafood directly from ports along the Sea of Japan (such as Toyama Bay, a region known nationwide for its premium seafood). This means you’ll find surprisingly fresh fish, sashimi, and other seafood dishes even in this mountain town.

Masaya is a well-loved Japanese restaurant located about 13 minutes on foot from Takayama Station’s west exit. Known for its exceptionally fresh seafood, Masaya is a popular spot with both locals and travelers looking for an authentic Japanese dining experience.
At lunchtime, Masaya offers a variety of daily set meals featuring expertly prepared sashimi, simmered fish, grilled or fried dishes, tempura, saikyo-yaki (miso marinated fish), and more. Each meal often comes with handmade vegetable sides such as salads and simmered dishes, making for a well-balanced and satisfying meal.
In the evening, Masaya transforms into an izakaya, a traditional Japanese bar, serving delicious Japanese dishes and a selection of local and regional sake. The owner-chef personally selects seasonal fish, so the menu changes regularly according to the freshest catch.

Masaya is operated by a local husband-and-wife team, giving the restaurant a welcoming atmosphere. The interior features a counter with a large aquarium and traditional seating, making it great for both solo diners and groups. Reservations are recommended due to the restaurant’s popularity, especially during lunch and dinner hours.
From the restaurant, it’s about a 20-minute walk to Hida Folk Village, where you can explore traditional gassho-zukuri farmhouses and experience local crafts.
