A short journey north of central Kyoto brings you to Kibune (also referred to as Kifune), an area surrounded by flowing streams and lush greenery. Known for its cooler summer temperatures, Kibune has long been a popular place to escape the heat. While many visitors come for kawadoko dining<\/a> along the river, Kifune Shrine, dedicated to the deity of water, is also well worth a visit. Each summer, Kifune Shrine holds its annual Water Festival (Mizu Matsuri) to express gratitude for this precious resource and pray for its continued blessings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the day of the festival, Shinto priests conduct rituals and ceremonial dances are offered in gratitude for water. Rather than the lively atmosphere associated with many summer festivals in Japan, the Mizu Matsuri offers visitors a chance to encounter a quieter side of Kyoto’s summer traditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When visiting Kifune Shrine, you can also try mizuura mikuji, a special water fortune found at the shrine’s main sanctuary. Place the seemingly blank fortune paper on the sacred water, and characters gradually appear to reveal your fortune\u2014a unique tradition connected to Kifune Shrine’s association with water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Kibune area is approximately one hour from THE MACHIYA EBISUYA Hotel<\/a> by city bus and the Eizan Railway. With its lush greenery and scenery distinctly different from central Kyoto, Kibune offers a refreshing summer escape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
